Toronto Will Not Tender Offer to Arencibia
Steve Simmons has just tweeted that the Toronto Blue Jays will not be tendering an offer to J.P. Arencibia. The deadline for tendering contract offers to arbitration-eligible players is midnight EST time. As expected, the Jays have made offers to Esmil Rogers, Brett Cecil, and Colby Rasmus. This news means J.P. Arencibia will become a free agent if he is not traded before tonight’s deadline. Alex Anthopoulos has likely encountered little trade interest in Arencibia and his projected $2.8 million arbitration award (according to MLBTR’s Matt Swartz) and the Navarro signing has opened the door for him to simply non-tender Arencibia if indeed there are no teams interested in acquiring him via trade. This news more or less confirms that Navarro will be the starting catcher for the Toronto Blue Jays next season (if there was any doubt). Josh Thole is also under contract for $1.25 million in 2014.
There are a lot of Toronto fans rejoicing after this announcement, and a lot of teenage girls and middle-aged cougars in tears.
