Red Sox Sign A.J. Pierzynski

According to a Jon Heyman report, the Red Sox have signed A.J. Pierzynski.

A.J. has posted seasons of 1.6, 3.3 and 1.2 fWAR the past three seasons, most recently with the Rangers. Pierzynski has also played with the White Sox, Giants and Twins in his career.

According to Matt Carruth’s catcher report, Pierzynski is a well below-average pitch framer, grading out at -11.4 runs last year.

Buster Olney says that the deal is for one year and $8.25 million, double the average annual value that the Jays gave Navarro. Pierzynski will be 38 years old at the end of the month. The deal could be a bridge for Boston’s top catching prospects, Christian Vazquez and Blake Swihart. After this move, it appears inevitable that Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be catching elsewhere next season.
