Ranking MLB Starting Rotations: 30-26

This is the first of 6 parts in my series ranking MLB starting rotations. The rankings will be largely based off of my projections, with some manual fiddling. Pitchers who are all but guaranteed spots in their respective rotations will be included, and then any other spots will be filled with the best pitcher available. The projections are considered to be in a vacuum (no park factors, team defense, or catcher help). This makes it...

Report: Yankees Closing in on Deal With Ellsbury

According to Jon Heyman, the New York Yankees may be close to signing a deal with top free agent outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury. The deal is reportedly worth $153 million over 7 years, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, good for an AAV of $21 million. Ellsbury, one of the top outfielders in the game, has posted seasons of 5.8, 1.4, and 9.1 (!) fWAR in the past three years, with his 2012 being injury-marred. Ellsbury...

Nationals Acquire Doug Fister

Um.. what? Chris Cotillo (who is, no jokes, still in high school) just reported that the Tigers have traded Doug Fister to the Nats. Doug Fister should be worth a lot. Maybe A LOT. He is coming off of a very stellar 4.6 fWAR season, he has 15.9 fWAR in the last 4 years, and he’s durable to boot (26+ starts in every year of his career). RA Dickey and the Knuckleballer Aging Curve

R.A. Dickey is on everyone’s minds right now thanks to our rising star Chris Carruthers’ excellent research into the The Dickey Effect, so I decided to update and re-post some knuckleball research that I did last offseason, after Toronto traded for Dickey. R.A. Dickey had a rough first season in Toronto. His 4.21 ERA and 4.58 FIP were both much worse than his three year 2.95 ERA with the Mets. From 2010-2012, Dickey ranked...

Bird Seed: McCann, Peralta, Samardzija, Nolasco, Anthopoulos

Bird Seed is your regular recap of recent baseball happenings, information, rumours, and how it all affects the Blue Jays. The catching market got even thinner yesterday when the Yankees gave Brian McCann a five year, 85 million dollar contract to shave his facial hair and catch baseballs for them. The contract apparently includes a vesting option on the sixth year at $15 million. McCann has been worth 3.9, 1.7, and 2.7 fWAR in his...
